One thing that most aren't aware of is that authors, like me, are into the restriction of "free information" because some people think that means they can freely, without compensation, distribute my books via ebook format. I am all for the free distributing of information, but not my ebooks. I am a writer. I have the right to be compensated for my work. Please don't steal my ebooks from a free download site. When you do that, you damage me as a writer. I don't get paid for that. You think "oh, big deal, it's one book" but it's not. It's one book over and over and over and over because everyone thinks it's one book. I don't lose a buck. I lose hundreds of dollars. Worse, since no one buys my book from the publisher, they don't ask me back to write the next book. My series dies because no one buys my books. They all swipe it from a pirate site.

This book captivated me to the point that I didn't want to put it down. I got so wrapped up in the conflict between Mary and Michael that I grew annoyed with anything or anyone that interfered with my reading. Even my husband. OVERLORD will make you laugh and cry, and I highly recommend it to any reader who loves romantic space adventures that are heavier on character than technological development.

Low carb meatloaf burgers with creamy mushroom sauce

1 large egg

1 ½ tesp Lipton onion soup mix

1/3 cup rolled oats (old fashioned kind, not instant or steel cut)

2 T water.

--mix well. Crumble into mixture:

1 pound 80% fat hamburger, raw

--mix well. Fashion into two patties.

Place in pre-heated and greased frying pan on low for about 8 minutes a side. While hamburger is cooking

2 T butter into soup pan, melt thoroughly and let cook, while watching, until you’ve cooked away most of the water. Add

1 cup heavy cream. Heat to a boil, stirring constantly. You’re trying to cook off some of the water from the cream. This should take you to 8 min so flip the burger then to your sauce, add

1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese. Stir very well as it melts. Not all of it will. That’s okay. Wait until the last minute on cooking the burgers then add to your sauce:

1 cup sweated mushrooms drained and pressed to remove excess water.
1 T sour cream (optional, but it gives a nice layered flavor)

Heat through, salt to taste. Place burger on plate and cover with sauce.

Yum! Your big carb load is from the oatmeal, but one cooked half pound burger would have approx 15 grams of carbs. Also note the mushrooms are pre-cooked for this. I buy about 4 pounds of them a week. I cut them into slices and put them into a big stock pot with 2 cups of water on low and let them slowly cook. Then I can use them during the week with eggs, as a side, or in recipes.

For a side on this you can have broccoli or cauliflower, which are good with the sauce too. Enjoy!

Your fiancée?

No, we were never engaged. We didn’t love each other and I think she was relieved when I rejected the arrangement.

Why did you do that?

I loved and lost. If I couldn’t marry Gen, then I wasn’t going to marry anyone.

Hm, still that seems like a poor excuse to leave you behind. I take it your relationship with your parents wasn’t great?

Not at all. They didn’t even love each other – marriage was merely a convenient arrangement. My mother was relieved that her first child was male and meant she didn’t need to do anything more to secure an heir. I had a series of nannies, all steeped in imparting how vital I was to the continuation of the family business and name.

Nice. So where does Gen fit in with all this?

Gen and I met at a party. Actually it was a masked ball. She’d no idea how I was and we got talking. She remains the only one close to me that treated me as a person, rather than a commodity.

What happened between you then?

My parents. Gen wasn’t the “right fit”. She didn’t come from money and she worked. On the eve of our wedding, my father locked me in my room. When I got out, Gen had simply vanished. I never got over that.

Addiction to bad punctuation--a cautionary tale

My editor is into anti-interrobang proliferation. If you don't know what an interrobang is, it's one of the most offensive punctuation marks. If you're a sensitive viewer, look away . . .

It's a combination of a question mark and an exclamation mark. It's supposed to represent a question asked loudly or with passion. But according to my editor (who wishes to remain annoymous) using such renegade punctuation sets a dangerous precedent.

"It's true... Once you start using them, you get hooked. It starts with using too many ellipses... And then you progress to double question marks. And then, before you even know you've got a problem...you're relying on interrobangs to get the same kick out of your dialogue that you used to get with a simple period. It's an ugly downward spiral."

Now that you know, won't you join us in refusing to welcome this heretical mark into the punctuation pantheon? If you don't think this is a dangerous activity, take a look at this man who only used an interrobang three times:

What the hell happened to simple, basic manners? I don't mean knowing the difference between a salad fork and a shrimp fork, but everyday things like saying please, thank you, and wiping your feet?

I can't tell you how many times I've said, "Thank you" to a delivery man only to be looked at curiously.

I let someone go in front of me at the grocery store because they have one item to my 50 and rather than thanking me they glare at me suspiciously. They still go first, but they make sure I know they aren't happy about it.

Wrong number? I tell them the number they misdialed and wish them well. When I dial a wrong number I apologize. What happens when I'm on the receiving end of a wrong number? BAM! They hang up in my face without comment. Would it really kill you to say, "Oops, I must have misdialed." Soooooo much nicer.

I'm not asking for a return to days where men bowed, women curtsied, and everyone was sexually repressed (nooooooooooooooooooooooooo) but for the love of gawd, people, practice some basic manners!

Rather than training the dog, the family shuns the dog. Dog whines pitifully. Family ignores dog. Dog barks nonstop in an effort to get attention. No attention is forth coming.

Bored, lonely, and ill-trained, anything the dog sees, hears, smells, feels causes fits of barking that last for hours.

Tattoos fade with time. Emotions never lose their edge.

A few subtle hints from Luke is all it takes to make Seb consider indulging in some of that physical passion. It shouldn’t be that tough to keep his emotions from getting tangled up in sweaty sheets.

After all, it’s not like he’s in love with Luke anymore. Right?

Yikes! I was supposed to post this yesterday but I forgot. So, here are my six sentences for Sunday. This is from Thief.

Just like Danna, Kraft thought. Most of the time, Heller had no idea what she was talking about. She stopped to examine a pen of bright white chickens. “Best way to man’s heart is through his stomach.”

“Only if you jam your hand in and make a sharp left.” Heller mouthed the quip sideways, out the corner of his lips, and then focused his leering gaze on the woman who tended the penned up chickens.

Mushroom Soup

Several folks on Facebook asked for my mushroom recipes. Here is the most basic of all mushroom recipes, besides saute, or dredge in flour and fry.

1 cup chopped onion

1 1/2 cups chicken broth (or other broth)

5 cups chopped fresh mushrooms

3 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons butter*

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 cup half-and-half, or 2 cups milk, mix-n-match

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (or more)

Directions:

In a large heavy soup pan (I use one of my big stock pots), using low heat, cook onions with the broth and butter until tender, sometimes this can take up to 30 min. Using an immersion blender, puree the onions. You don’t want any onion pieces, just the flavor. Then add the mushrooms. Simmer about 10 to 15 minutes. Set aside. Oh, and don’t worry if the liquid doesn’t cover the mushrooms; they have a lot of water and will add to the liquid as they cook down. Chopped or sliced is up to you.

In a large, heavy saucepan (I like cast iron) melt the second 3 T of butter, whisk in the flour until smooth. Add the salt, pepper, half and half (or milk) and then the above mixture. Stirring constantly, bring soup to a boil and cook until thickened. Adjust seasonings to taste, and add lemon right before serving. If you reheat, another splash of lemon makes the flavor pop.

Measurements are approximate. Don’t be afraid to do more or less of anything listed. If it’s too runny, you can use cornstarch dissolved in water to thicken. You can also add things like cooked bacon, sour cream, or different herbs, depending what’s in season, and what you like. I’ve tried this with all kinds of mushrooms and it works well.

*you use butter twice in this recipe. Hell, if you want the coronary blast, you can serve with a pat of butter in the center of the bowl. :) Also, serve with a crusty bread, like French or garlic bread. Yum.

Don’t Worry! Roasted Pepper Tomato Soup

This soup is made slowly over the course of a day. Usually on Sunday while I’m multi-tasking with laundry, writing, and other random stuff. Makes 10 cups, but a serving is really about two cups. Stores well in the fridge. I haven’t frozen it yet, so I’m not sure if it would hold it’s flavor. Frankly, it gets eaten up before freezing it becomes an issue. :)

3# tomatoes, chopped, don’t worry about seeds or the little green caps where the stems connect, you’re gonna strain this. I use Roma tomatoes, but just about any would do.

1 cup chopped onion. Seems too little but don't worry! I used white ones, but any type you like will do. If you got an onion Jones, add more.

Add some salt, 1-3 teaspoons depending on your taste buds and the type of salt. I like that big grained Kosher salt.

Toss the tomatoes, onion, and salt in a big stock pot, cover, and put on very low heat. Add water to just below covering them. They are going to sit here and simmer while you do this next part.

6 roasted peppers. Okay, at Sam’s Club, I get the greenhouse pkg with two red, two yellow, two orange. Using a gas stove, I roast them top side. Burn the hell out of them and turn with tongs. They will pop and crackle, yeah, it’s fun, and it takes longer than you think, about 10-15 minutes on medium heat. What I do is have two going at the same time. Oh, and I love the smell, but I had the house vented--I think it could get overwhelming and possibly set off smoke alarms. :)

So, I do two peppers at the same time, on two separate burners, then when they are done, I put them in a covered casserole dish to “steam”. Again, just pop them in as you finish. No rush, no worries! Let these cool for about 30 min or more after you add the last one. You’re going to be skinning them, so you want them cool enough to touch, or, you could wear rubber gloves, like the kind you wear while washing dishes. If you are sensitive to peppers, this is a way to protect yourself.

Once they are cool, rub or use a butter knife to peel away all the blackened skin. Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect; a few scabs of black here and there won’t hurt. Once you’ve got the skin off, cut around the stem, remove, pull out most of the seeds, dispose of this, then chop and toss the pulp into the tomato and onions that have been simmering. Again, if you miss some seeds, don’t worry! You’re going to strain this.

Let all this simmer until everything is very soft. Anywhere from 30-60 minutes. Again, don’t worry! Timing isn’t exact. When you think things are mushy enough, whip out your immersion blender (I call mine the ThunderStick) and purée this mixture. It will be pretty thick and smell wonderful. If you don’t have a ThunderStick, go buy one; immersion blenders are so much safer, faster, and easier than using a blender or food processor. Remember, this stuff is hot.

Remove from heat. Leave lid off and allow to cool. It doesn't have to be cold for the next step, just not boiling hot. Carefully strain this mixture. I use a large colander that has a screen type mesh. What I do is put the bowl shaped strainer over another stock pot in the sink then pour in the purée. Using a silicone spatula, press the pulp against the strainer. You’re straining out the seeds that weren’t chopped up by the ThunderStick and the tomato skins. Press and scrape, press and scrape. At the end, you’ll wind up with about 1-2 cups of leavings. Toss into the compost bin. Scrape the underside of the colander.

Rinse out the original stock pot, just to get out any random clumps and seeds, then, on low heat, toss in:

½ cup butter, or margarine, or SmartBalance. All work well. In a pinch, you can use an oil like canola or something, but it won’t add any flavor. Olive oil will overpower the soup--I’d only use that as a drizzle at the end if you’re into that kind of thing.

½ cup flour. White or whole wheat, again, don’t worry! Whisk until smooth.

Slowly add 2-3 cups milk. Stir, stir, stir. 2 % works well, as does 1 %, but skim seems too wimpy. Full milk or half-n-half would make it super rich! If you have left overs, mix and match. Add enough to have a gravy consistency. Think country gravy over biscuits. You don't want it too thin, though, because you'll be adding about 8 cups of puree. (Just a note, but if this soup, or any other, gets too thin, use 1 Tablespoon of Corn Starch dissolved in 1/4 cup of water. The liquid must be boiling for this to work and thicken the soup. However, with this one, don't worry! The amount of pulp from tomatoes and peppers adds an amazing thickness.)

Toss in ½ to 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese. You can skip this part if you want but it adds another dimension of flavor. Feel free to experiment with other cheeses, but you want something that will melt into the butter, flour, and milk. Like, mozzarella won't work; it gets stringy.

Slowly add the tomato, onion, pepper puree mixture while stirring constantly.

Adjust salt, also add about 1-2 teaspoons sugar--it enhances the sweetness of the pepper.

Right before serving, add 2-3 Tablespoons lemon juice, fresh or bottled, again, don’t worry! :)

Serve with crusty bread and a fresh green salad.
